Transfer mobile number
Moving a phone number from one provider to another is called porting, and it’s easy to do. You simply ask your current provider for what’s known as a PAC code, which you then give to your new provider. You can do this when ordering a new SIM only plan or pay as you go SIM. Your new provider will then ensure that your old contract is cancelled and you keep your existing phone number.
How do PAC codes work?
PAC stands for Porting Authorisation Code, which is a code you receive from your current provider when you want to switch to another provider and keep your number. You can request a PAC code in several different ways.
Various ways to request a PAC code
- Send a text with the word PAC to 65075. You can use this number regardless of which provider you currently use.
- Log in to your account on your provider’s website and request a PAC code there.
- Call your current provider and request a PAC code.
If you call your provider, they are required to give you a PAC code immediately or, if that’s not possible, send the PAC code to you within two hours. If you request the PAC code via text or the provider’s website, you should receive the code within two working days.
How to transfer your phone number to another provider
- If you have a SIM only plan, start by checking the contract length and notice period with your current provider. If you still have a contract that hasn’t ended, you may need to pay for the remaining months (in some cases you might get a small discount) if you choose to cancel your subscription.
- If you are no longer tied to a contract, you are free to switch providers, and you can then request a PAC code using any of the methods we’ve described above.
- Once you have received your PAC code, you can choose a suitable contract or pay as you go SIM with a new provider and place your order. With some providers, you can enter the PAC code when you place your order. Otherwise, you’ll need to wait until your SIM card arrives before you can transfer your number to your new provider.
- Once you have received your SIM card, activate it (if required).
- Write down the number for your new SIM card, so you can use it until your old number has been transferred.
- Contact your new provider and give them the PAC code. In some cases, you can also transfer your number by logging into your account with your new provider or by texting a specific number. Visit the provider’s website or contact their customer service to find out how you can proceed.
- Your phone number should be transferred within one working day, but this can depend on when you submitted the PAC code. Sometimes it may take longer.
Can I transfer my phone number with a pay as you go SIM?
Yes, you can transfer your phone number even if you have a pay as you go SIM. It works in a similar way as having a contract, except you don’t have any commitment period or notice period to consider, which can make things a bit simpler.
Can I transfer my phone number if I still have a contract?
If you still have a contract with your current provider, your new provider can only start the transfer once the contract has ended. So make sure to check both the contract term and notice period on your plan before requesting a porting.
However, you can always choose to terminate the contract early, but that will normally incur additional fees. If you do not want to wait for your contract to end, you can ask the provider for an early termination fee to leave the contract quickly. Once you have paid it, you can sign up for a contract with a new provider and ask them to transfer your number.
